Barbara Morris: It's Not Denial to Live Defiantly

Woe to the woman who successfully manages her aging process -- she’s often awarded a “Scarlet D” for “denial” by mean-spirited critics.

Let’s recognize the difference between denial and defiance when dealing with the aging process.

Denial is refusal to accept what has happened. We all get old chronologically so it’s stupid to deny that. But it’s also stupid to deny that we can take measures to improve or mitigate what has happened as a result of passage of time.

For example, you have gained too much weight and your face is wrinkled. You can decide to take the weight off and get a skin peel to eliminate or diminish wrinkles. That’s not denial; that’s defiance. Intelligent defiance can make a huge difference in how well you age.

Mary Lloyd: Appreciating "Dormant"

We’ve reached my least favorite month of the year--“dreaded November.”  Growing up in Wisconsin, January was the daunting month.  But snow and subzero temperatures pale in comparison to what November dishes up in the Pacific Northwest.  It’s dark enough to develop photographs at my dining room table at noon and the rain and wind just keep on coming.  Ah, November…  The perfect time to look at the wisdom of learning to wait

The gloom and cold and Mother Nature’s nasty fits have sweet purpose for everything in the yard that has either died or gone dormant and for us, as a reminder that resting is an important part of living well.

Joyce Shafer:
Say Goodbye to New Year Resolutions

No, it isn’t too early to consider this; it is exactly the right time. The very things you do or don’t do about resolutions are what you do right now. And, you can do them differently starting today.

First, it’s important to understand why resolutions you make any time fizzle out. For one, you may feel a strong desire for something to shift or change, but if your commitment to make it happen doesn’t match your desire, you’ll do what’s convenient (for a while or forever) rather than what it takes.

Another reason is maybe you aren’t clear on your why—why you really want what you say you do. The reason you think you want something may be buried under layers, hiding your real reason—which is a feeling you wish to have and keep. For example, if you want to reduce the numbers on a weight scale, what’s your why? If it’s so the opinion of others about you will be what you want it to be, that’s a formula for failure and an unpleasant experience.

Barbara Morris: Older Americans Working Longer: How Awful! What a Disgrace!

Retirement was not created by God. I am sure of that because I have reviewed the Ten Commandments and no where can I find “Thou shall retire at age 65 or sooner.”

Social Security, which is the sole source of income for many retirees, will be bankrupt in a couple of years. This means that if you are now working and choose to retire you do so at great peril to your standard of living.

The economy is a mess but older workers – those lucky enough to still have a job – are now seen as victims. I read article after article about Americans getting older and having to work longer, and the tone of the articles without fail, is “Oh, those poor old people. How terrible that they have to continue to work because of the crappy economy.”

The difference between great people and everyone else is that great people create their lives actively, while everyone else is created by their lives, passively waiting to see where life takes them next. The difference between the two is the difference between living fully and just existing.
