  • Keep What You Got, Girlfriend -- A Challenge

You've probably heard a debilitated senior lament that "Old age is not for sissies." I don't like the expression, but it's true. Old age is not for sissies. It's for tough-cookie visionaries who look beyond today and decide what kind of future they want.

The problem is, when you are 50 and feeling fine (or at least, "okay") it's difficult to think about life in the future. You have more pressing concerns right now: your kids, your job, the mortgage, and perhaps your husband who may be muddling through a midlife crisis.

    Joyce Shafer Wisdom

All of us have moments when we find ourselves at a crossroads and we're not positively certain which path to take. We may turn to family or friends for their thoughts and ideas. This is good if what you're doing is looking for something akin to brainstorming for things to consider. Some who are well-meaning may say, "Let me tell you what you ought to do," or they use the dreaded word "should." When this happens, nod politely, but stay true to yourself.

    Helpful Links for This Month

This link provides a list of items (and links to them) that I've found during October. I've chosen them to encourage you to take better care of yourself, and to help you understand the importance of taking supplements. The list is long -- take a look -- you never know what you will find that may make a difference in your life.

Could You Live Longer Than 140 Years? Cambridge researcher Aubrey de Grey - featured in this video -- believes aging is a preventable phenomenon, much like a disease, that aging is merely a side effect of being alive. He explains his belief that humans could live for centuries, if only we approach the aging process as "an engineering problem." He outlines the seven basic ways people age, and how to solve each one. And if we get to work now, he says, humans alive today could live to be 1,000.

    Do You Have Senior ADD?

So many older people worry about memory loss, and it's a legitimate worry. If you are one of those worriers, how would you feel if you were told, "Don't worry - it's probably just ADD."

    It's just ADD?

"According to Russell Barkley, a psychiatry professor at the State University of New York, diagnoses of attention deficit disorder among seniors will likely increase in the coming years, as baby boomers hit retirement age and the disorder becomes more widely understood. " (From an article by Teri Berg, Columbia News Service, October 7, 2007)

However, the professor cited above admits, "The trouble is that no studies have been done on ADD in the elderly population." How's that for a revelation?

Book Review: Bold Retirement: Mining Your Own Silver for a Rich Life

When Mary Lloyd asked me to review her book, Bold Retirement: Mining Your Own Silver for a Rich Life I agreed but with some trepidation. There are two words in the title that are turnoffs for me: "retirement" and "silver." I loathe and detest the word "retirement" and the word "silver" conjures up visions of well off couples playing golf and going on cruises as a lifestyle. Even though the word "bold" is used to modify the word "retirement" in a positive way I thought, "Well, here's one more book that tells old people how to live life as a pastime."
