No More Little Old Ladies!:  A Rave Review -- From a Guy!

Bob Hill at www.BoomerBrief.com recently did a fantastic spot-on review of my book, No More Little Old Ladies! Some of the best reviews I've gotten are from men, which I don't get, but I'm grateful. I'm often asked to write a book about aging for men but I don't think I understand the male psyche well enough to write a book for them. On the other hand, maybe I've already told them what they need to know in No More Little Old Ladies!  Before getting to the review, here's a little about www.BoomerBrief.com taken from the site:

BoomerBrief.com is written by Boomers for Boomers. The brains behind BoomerBrief.com are Bob and Charlotte. Bob is a slightly-graying public relations exec with a database brain and an opinion about everything. His Wii Fit age is 85, but in real life he's still in his 50's. Charlotte is a PR exec too, and bears a striking resemblance to Olivia Newton John (yeah, she gets that a lot). She's in her 50's in real life and only 34 in Wii years. This really pisses off Bob. But, what can he do? She's so fit she'd take him in a fair fight.

Now, on to the review:

Mary Lloyd: What Are You Thinking!?

Well-being is more dependent on the way you see things than most of us realize. Being mindful instead of letting someone else's labels define you, your health, your challenges, even your strengths can make a major difference in the quality of your life.

At the moment, I'm into Ellen Langer's book Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility. This isn't a New Age exhortation to do affirmations and expect blessings. Langer is a social psychologist who's been researching the mind/body link scientifically for decades. She and her students at Harvard have done study after study with amazing results about the power of little things that are conveyed in words.

Joyce Shafer: Does Self Appreciation Affect Your Experiences and Results?

Whatever you believe about how to achieve desired results, your outcomes ARE affected by how much self-appreciation you feel. It's the same for how you engage your experiences.

Let's imagine you agree that . . .
How your attention (emotionally-charged thoughts) is focused (exercised or applied) directly relates to what you give, receive, and experience more of; and that
How you experience others and events in your life, at the inner level, is a direct result of-how your attention (emotionally-charged thoughts) is focused (exercised or applied).

Henry Montag: Creating Financial Security in Your Life

Recognizing that you probably already know…….

"Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve" is more than a saying, it means you know that a thought, clearly pictured in your mind is a very powerful tool that can actually make that thought become a reality in your life. Using that as a backdrop ask yourself, "What can I do to achieve a greater sense of independence and freedom from financial worry in my life?" That's a question I've been asking people for the last 35 years of my professional life as a CFP.

Barbara Morris: Is Decline Inevitable?

Oprah is getting her OWN network and has invited those with an idea for a show to submit a video. In response to the video I submitted, (see the video link below) a very wise person made this comment:

"Barbara, I would love to see you get your own show, you would have a huge audience out there, just speaking about the capabilities of people who are somewhat senior citizens, encouraging them and giving them something positive to think about and do, making them feel like they are still worthwhile human beings who have some dignity left. I have worked in the nursing homes and assisted living facilities and it is not a pretty picture, so you have my vote, and I will be watching with baited breath."

Controversy: What's Wrong With This Picture?

Isn't that a sweet family picture -- grandpa surrounded by his gorgeous great granddaughters. No--wait--it's 84 year-old Hugh Hefner surrounded by women who have not yet learned their value is in their brains, not their beauty. Alas, by the time they are thirty, they will be considered "too old" to be used as Playboy material.

What if Betty White were shown surrounded by handsome very young men? Would it be celebrated, or would she be castigated and accused of cradle robbing?
Do you think SNL and snarky bloggers would treat her kindly? After all, she's 88. Hey -- wouldn't she be the perfect "older woman" for 84 year-old Hefner? (Did I hear someone say, "Not in this life!")

As usual, there is a lot of  very useful information. In particular, I suggest that you take a look at the link for the eye contour strips. They are amazing. There is a slight learning curve, but once you get the hang of using them, they work.

Helen Thomas and Other Agonies of Aging

In response to recent inappropriate remarks made by 89 year-old long time White House correspondent Helen Thomas, a Wall St. Journal article, "A Nation of Helen Thomases" opened with this:

"Say what you will about Helen Thomas, but she's the future of America. No, not for her militant anti-Zionism. For working well into the third age of life - and long after some of her colleagues wished she'd moved to Florida."

Helen Thomas has believed what she believes for a very long time, so let's not blame what comes out of her mouth on her age. To do so perpetuates the nonsense that a long life gives you a free pass to say whatever you want to say because, after all, you are probably senile.
