Barbara Morris: Retirement Havens Turning Younger?

A December 1, 2008 online The Wall Street Journal article, "Retiree Havens Turn Younger to Combat the Housing Bust" reveals that retirement communities are feeling the pressure of the collapsing economy. To deal with vacancies and unsold homes, some communities, to the dismay of residents, are considering age desegregation -- lowering the age of entry to 45 in order to attract new occupants. Resident displeasure is understandable because when you choose to move into a quiet structured community, you don't want families with kids or teenagers running around disturbing your lifestyle.

Having said that . . .

Mary Lloyd: Economy Victims or Victors?

We’re at the start of a fresh new year, but most of us are still covered with dust from the implosion of financial and commercial institutions we thought we could count on.  Maybe it was your mortgage lender.  Maybe it was your bank.  Maybe it was the company you used to work for.  It would be hard to find an American who has not been affected by the violent convulsions of the economy in 2008.

All that makes it easy to feel like a victim, personally and as a society.  The economy has done us in.  That’s a treacherous path to choose though and it leaves us far short of what we could be getting out of this.  This is the furnace from which the steel of our characters can be forged—but not if we simper like a bunch of scared little bunnies and hide under the bed.

Joyce Shafer: Neville Goddard's Law of Revision

Some people believe Law of Attraction or positive thinking is a waste of time. Use this simple technique of Neville Goddard's, and watch what happens.

Let's face it, there's a myriad of techniques people can wrap their mind around in order to make a goal or dream happen. Neville Goddard offered many ideas, but one in particular was to write a letter you'd like to receive from someone. Of course, the Internet age wasn't around when he proposed this.

Michael E. Platt, M.D. Reviews Suzanne Somers New Book

It is undeniable that Suzanne Somers has used her intellect and celebrity to legitimize healthy living and in particular, natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Her numerous books and appearances on TV have helped countless women open their minds and take charge of their health.

However, there are respected voices  in the medical community who generally support what she is trying to accomplish but question some of her writing.  Dr. Michael E. Platt (whose book, The Miracle of Bio Identical Hormones is posted to the left -->) wrote a review of Suzanne's new book,
Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness which appears on Amazon, and is reprinted here with Dr. Platt's permission.

Sandy Dumont: Lipstick is a Girl's Best Friend

Women have been brainwashed by cosmetic companies into believing that brown-toned lipstick or gloss looks natural. It doesn’t, it looks drab and dull. It can even make your teeth look dull. For eons, women have stained their lips with berries because they knew it brightened their faces and made them look more attractive. They didn’t stain their lips with brown berries, did they? They stained them with cherries.

Cosmetic companies have learned that it is easier to sell a so-called neutral lipstick than a fuchsia lipstick, for example. Those “neutral” colors won’t smudge or run into those little lines around the lips like a “bright” shade might do. Nor will they call attention to your most worrisome flaw - the one that comes with age – the shrinking top lip. Most women avoid “bright” lipstick colors because they are afraid it will only call attention to their too-small upper lip.

Barbara Morris: What Women Want to Know

I recently checked my Put Old on Hold website statistics to see what keywords and phrases people were using to find information on the site. I found three interesting key phrases:

"How can a 50 year old get in shape"
"Putting your life on hold for your aging parent"
"Retired how to stay productive"

The answer to each query is simple: PLAN AHEAD.

How can a 50 year old get in shape? Have a plan. Know where you want your shape to be in 6 months or in one year. Next, sign up at a fitness center or better yet, buy a treadmill or other exercise equipment that you can keep in your home and use every day. It doesn't have to be expensive. You just have to use it come hell or high water. Get back to basics with food. You know the drill: fresh fruit, veggies, protein. Lots of water. Take supplements to compensate for what you do not get in your diet. Get your head in gear. Know that you can do what you make up your mind to do.
