Barbara Morris: What's In a Name? Plenty, If You Are a Boomer

Thanks to everyone who responded to my call for help in finding a new title for my new book. There was a huge response and I have to say, there is a lot of talent out there! Thanks to your generous and helpful input, I now have a new title which I will reveal in due time. :-) "Why Boomer Women Become Their Mothers" has been retired.

As I told those who responded, one suggestion in particular threw me off, and it was this: “Barbara, no more "boomer", it's outdated.”

I wasn’t aware that “boomer” is outdated, so I wanted to find the person who made that claim. I didn’t want to argue about it, I just wanted to be brought up to date. If there is a new designation for “boomer” all boomers  need to know about it. Good grief! I would rather chew nails and spit rust than have anyone think that I’m not up on all things pertaining to boomers.

Mary Lloyd: Juggling Versus Balancing

Are you delaying all the fun so you can get all the work done?  That’s one of the saddest characteristics of today’s busy lives.  We scramble to get everything that “needs to be done” accomplished and have no time left for the activities that bring us joy.

Our approach to retirement is even more that way.  We give excessive amounts of time to a job so that we can “get retirement” once we reach a certain age.  I am a strong proponent of work.  I think we need to do it for our entire lives.  But it’s got to be in balance.  All work now for all play later is just plain dumb.  You need to play now.  (And you need to work at something once you retire, even if it’s not for pay.)

Joyce Shafer:
Would You Rather Be On Purpose or Perfect?

Be perfect or be on purpose? Which one of these has been “driving your bus” so far? If you or someone you know struggles with perfectionism, can this hold you back from living on purpose?

Ask someone to walk to the moon and you’ll hear, “Not realistic,” as a response. They wouldn’t have a problem giving that answer.

Ask some people to be perfect and you can almost hear the inner and outer dialogue start — “You have no idea how hard I try to be just that.”

Leslie Charles, CSP: AWARENESS: A Simple Strategy for Enriching Life and Work

Here in Michigan the light is returning. As January winds down, first light comes earlier and darkness comes later. The woodpeckers are beginning to drum, and the squirrels in our yard are getting feisty. Things are changing; have you noticed? In nature, as in our lives, change is slow and subtle, yet ever present. The light changes a few seconds a day, soon adding up to minutes, and by summer the difference is vast, measured not in moments, but hours. It's a slow progression, indistinct at first, but one day we look around and truly grasp that things are different.

Jane Galbraith, BScN, R.N Nobody Wants to Talk About It -- Boomers Face Grief

Baby Boomers are in for a shock!!! We may think that we are prepared for the sadness that will accompany our parents’ death. In fact we are usually totally unprepared for this life experience. To lose the people in your life that have always been there and know you the best is a life-altering event.

I was sure that I understood the pain that would accompany the eventual death of my mother. Professionally I was a nurse and involved in palliative care and bereavement counselling so I was sure that I was prepared. I was wrong!!

Lyn Harris, DMS:  Women and Depression

Women are at a higher risk for depression than men. Many women have a reason to be depressed. They live in poverty, are abused, or were abused as young girls. This early life abuse can set them up for depression as an adult. Long ago, we laughed off Freud's "anatomy is destiny" that blamed our depression on penis envy. Today, women are overworked, struggling financially, and expected to do it all- no wonder women are depressed.

Why more women? Women's anatomy lurks in the picture somewhere. Some women have PMS. Some women become depressed after the birth of a child. Some women suffer mood swings while going through menopause.

Eileen Bergen: Boomers Break Out!

I’m a Boomer, how ‘bout you?
Maybe you’re a Boomer too.

Heading for the big five-O,
Watching your investments go.

Will I have a job tomorrow?
Will I have to beg and borrow?

Tired of rat race corporate speak,
Fear of lay-off made me weak.

Lura Zerick: Age Is a State of Mind

Getting older is a subject that many don't want to discuss.  If we don't talk about it, maybe it will go away. Wrong!  Age is a fact of life, regardless of where we are in the numbers game. Just as each season has its' own beauty, so does each year of our lives. Many of us believe that Fall is the most beautiful time of year but the following months bring on Winter. Almost everyone has enjoyed the tranquil scene that signifies Winter. On the surface everything seems  quiet but underneath we know that everything in nature is preparing for the coming Spring.  Moving forward to the next step brings more rewarding things.

A Belated "Thank You" to "The Girls"

I have not yet publicly thanked my regular contributors, Mary Lloyd and Joyce Shafer. They are two of the most brilliant women I have the good fortune to know. Every month when they turn in their articles I am blown away by the quality of their work. If you don't read their articles in full, you are missing valuable insights and information that you can use to help make your life better.

There are new contributors this month and it is a privilege to publish their articles. I am in awe of what they offer to other women. It pains me that there are so many talented women who write from the heart who want to help other women yet their work often goes unread and unappreciated.

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributes to this newsletter. I hope subscribers appreciate "the girls" as much as I do.
