Facing Challenges as a "Senior"

by Lura Zerick

Regardless of our age, there are challenges to face and obstacles to overcome. During my 20s and 30s, I didn't face them very well and overcame few. Blinded by idealism, I was book smart but life dumb. As I near 80, I find that I still have daily challenges and try to add a little wisdom as I resolve these situations.

Sadly, many young people equate age with stupidity. I am ticked off when someone looks at me as if I don't know anything simply because I am 'an old lady'. Then again, I can't say too much because I realize that many have knowledge and education but know little or nothing about life or people. Often they are so self centered that they don't think or care about the opinion of others. Much of what I have learned came from painful experiences and I shudder to think of the situations they will learn from in the future.

Being an 'old lady' has its' advantages. First and foremost, I don't have to be young again! Who wants that, with all those traumatic years of being a 'trophy wife' who looks great on the outside but of course I couldn't have a brain. I spent twenty years with a deep sense of failure, allowing the words of others to tear me down, after awhile believing those words that I was stupid and useless.

Finally I got a backbone and began standing up for myself!!! For one thing, my spiritual self rose to the surface and I decided that if God loves me, I am worth loving and I should love me too! After making that decision, I remembered my God-given abilities and began using them. I realized that each day is a gift and vowed not to waste these hours dwelling on negative situations but see the possibilities of each day. This is like living in another world! Because I had become disappointed in my life and myself it was easy for negative words to hit the target of my worthlessness. This is such a lonely place to be.

I have learned that life is all about 'attitude'. How we think will change the outcome of any situation because our thoughts determine our actions. Having a positive attitude will help us make the best decision concerning the challenges we face each day.

This is not always easy to do but we must learn to throw out negative thoughts about ourselves, make improvements where we can and enjoy the gift of life. Each of us can accomplish a lot as we learn to see each day as a challenge to our abilities.

Don't allow a negative situation to demolish who you are or what you are trying to do. Face each day with the knowledge that the best is yet to come and your 'common sense' will help you resolve any situation. Enjoy being who you are as you learn to live the life God has planned for you!
