HELP! I'm Being Chased by Wrinkles

by Lura Zerick

Hey, wait a minute! I swung back toward the mirror I had been walking past. I had
glanced something I had not seen before. The left side of my face was covered with wrinkles!
I'm serious! The right side looked the same as always but the left side appeared to be one wide bunch of wrinkles! Unbelievable! I'm sure those weren't there yesterday!

As I stared at my face I realized that I was there at last. I was becoming a 'senior citizen'
right before my eyes! I am 79 but I've never felt old; I've always had the energy and attitude of someone much younger. I have never worried about my age. It is just another thing that we have no control over. We are what we are and I accept that. Those who are vain about their age just make me chuckle. They are fighting a losing battle and don't even realize it. Would they prefer the alternative?

So what if I am getting older? I am still breathing and I have things to do and age has
nothing to do with it. I'm still me, so what is a few more wrinkles? Didn't someone say that
wrinkles give 'character' to a face? I was seeing 'character' eye to eye; there was no doubt
about it! Those wrinkles are on my face, though, not my brain.

I already knew that when I smile, most of the facial wrinkles practically disappear! In
that moment, while considering the newer wrinkles I had just seen, I knew it would be
necessary to have a bigger smile. Hello, world! I might have a few wrinkles but that won't stop me. I have learned that my attitude determines whether or not I succeed. It will take more than a bunch of wrinkles to slow me down. I have new ideas to work on every day. When I have to wait at a doctor's office or lines at the post office, supermarket or wherever, I keep my mind alert to a word or sentence, or even a thought, that will give me a new subject for an article.

I must be really desperate to be glancing in the mirror at myself as I walk past, but, truthfully,
it really happened and that is how this article came to be.

Most of us do what we can to look good, whatever our age. At the same time, we are
to be realistic enough to know that as we get older our appearance will change. So what? We
are the same people inside. Actually, we need to streamline our inner person as well, to be that sincere, honest friend who can be trusted and relied on. We need to be, wrinkles and all, the kind of friend that we like to have. So look out! I'm coming through and I have things to do - and I won't forget to SMILE !
