Age Is a State of Mind

by Lura Zerick

Getting older is a subject that many don't want to discuss.  If we don't talk about it, maybe it will go away. Wrong!  Age is a fact of life, regardless of where we are in the numbers game. Just as each season has its' own beauty, so does each year of our lives. Many of us believe that Fall is the most beautiful time of year but the following months bring on Winter. Almost everyone has enjoyed the tranquil scene that signifies Winter. On the surface everything seems  quiet but underneath we know that everything in nature is preparing for the coming Spring.  Moving forward to the next step brings more rewarding things.

It is the same with our lives; each year brings new opportunities and experiences that might enhance our lives. Having a goal, at whatever age, can give us a reason to keep trying.  As we travel on the pathway of life, do we want to know only the beginning and maybe the middle of our trip? Of course not!  We need to learn about our destination; what the  later years bring.  These could be the most enjoyable, fun, fulfilling, rewarding, challenging time of our lives. Do we want  to miss the sense of accomplishment, or fulfillment, that we could have? No!  That is a feeling that money can't buy.

As we get older and experience various things, good or bad, we are to learn from these lessons and apply what we learn to our lives. In doing this, we can know more about ourselves and about life. We will become more secure in who we are and where we are in the chapters of our lives. As I compare our lives to a book, I am excited about the last chapters. Sometimes the end of a book can be the most exciting part!

My life has been like that; I felt old during my twenties and thirties. I did not like where I was in life because everything seemed to go wrong. I wasted twenty years with a deep sense of failure. Life began to get better when I was forty; I began to stand up for myself instead of allowing the words and actions of others to tear me down.  I began college classes when my youngest was in kindergarten and earned an A.A. degree in Journalism. I had already been published in various newspapers and later enjoyed seeing my articles in many national magazines. Nearing 59, my first book was published. Then I stopped writing for a few years while I was singing at special events, on radio and even television - local, national and international - and later began writing books again.

Following my dream, I have had four books published. I have five more books completed and am working on others. At age 79 I am having the time of my life, sharing the joy of living!
