I'm A High Stepping Dame!
by Lura Zerick
Most of us know that when several people see the same thing, each might
have a different version of what was seen. That is also true when others look at
seniors. Many believe that all of us are looking for another bingo game. Wrong!
When they look at me, what they don't see is that I am a well organized great-
grandmother on my way to my next event. You see, I'm old only on the outside.
When I walk across a room some might think, 'look at that silver-haired old
lady trying to make it to the kitchen.' They don't realize that in my mind I am
strutting because I am thankful that I can still enjoy the challenges of life.
You don't believe that a 79-year-old can strut? Watch and learn, baby! I am
capable of climbing those steps to the stage where I can still sing a popular song
or even dance if I wish. It is the getting up and down part that might slow me a bit
but that doesn't stop me.
If I look a little confused, I might have a new idea for an article that I am
getting together in my thoughts before I get it on paper. Or, I might be trying to
remember what I had for supper last night! Both of those can be entertaining so
I just relax and enjoy whatever pops up. Hey, that is better than worrying about
something that I probably can't change anyway. Being a worry-wart can make me
old before my time so I am trying for a little wisdom here.
Many older women are open to new ideas; they will listen and learn how to
accomplish another success. They can often put a painful past behind them and
go on to better and happier times. This is a special talent that takes us from one
point to another. We can go from creeping around the halls of life to a strut that
almost dares any obstacle to try to knock us down again.
Sometimes others don't see us as people; our silver hair tells them that we are over,
finished and done. Not so! It ain't over til it's over, so let's not rush it.
I'm still bouncing around; it just looks like I'm not moving. I am always glad to see
an older woman who uses her creativity and ideas to entertain, teach or share
with others all that she is capable of doing. What saddens me is to see a talented
person doing nothing, literally sitting there waiting to die. In my mind I can still do
that fancy jazz step, sing that snappy song and even get across the street!
Some might think that I am an old lady moving slowly through life but the
reality is that I am a high stepping dame on my way to somewhere and I am
having the time of my life! Why don't you join me?
