When Times are Tough, the Tough Sell Hotdogs
by James Mazzola
BM: You have seen ads that promise big bucks with dubious schemes. The following is about a REAL couple who sell hotdogs. If you are looking for a way to make a living, maybe this will inspire you.
My wife was a stay at home mom for almost 12 years. She only had a High School education. She had limited work experience before we met. She worked in an office as a clerk, she worked in an ice cream shop serving food and owned a very small house cleaning business.
Though we did not need the money, she decided to go back to work, but her options were very limited. Office work had changed much in 20 years. She did not want to clean houses and really, her only options would have been working retail or a cashier.
We still have two children 10 & 13. The thought of working evenings and weekends was not an option. Only making $7.00 to $8.00 dollars an hour made it not worth her time.
My family and I have been selling Hot Dogs for over 90 years. I have been doing it part time for over 30 years. All she knew was that I left every Saturday and came home with a pocket full of money.
So one day we talked about her starting her own Hot Dog Wagon close to home. One day she came to work with me and decided that it could be a fun business. Granted it is work. However, seeing that I had a good time, she decided she wanted to try it.
By herself, she scouted locations close to our home. She finally found one located on a local highway close to our home. Together we obtained all the permits and licenses and in about 3 months, we were ready to start.
The first day I went with her. I helped her out.
The second day I went with her and helped her set up and then I went to work.
The third day she did everything herself.
Three years later the rest is history.Three years later, she does everything herself. I load her wagon in the morning before I got to work. She sees the kids off to school. She comes home before they come home from school. And she makes $75.00 to $100.00 a day working 10:00 to 2:30.
When our children get a little older, she plans to expand her hours a little.
For now, she is very happy and has the thrill of watching her own business grow. It is a very small business, but is it hers and she has the pride of business ownership.
Prior to me writhing my book called "Welcome To Noff's Hot Dogs Guide To Success", their was no published information to help someone start a Hot Dog Vending business. I believe it is the greatest business in the world.
You will never be a millionaire, but you no one ever became poor selling hot dogs.Lets face it. In these economic times who could not use an extra $300.00 to $1000.00 a week? Plus have you ever seen an un-happy Hot Dog Vendor?
