Where's The Science? The Sorry State Of Psychotherapy
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/10/091002182633.htm
The
prevalence of mental health disorders in this country has nearly doubled in the
past 20 years. Who is treating all of these patients? Clinical psychologists and
therapists are charged with the task, but many are falling short by using
methods that are out of date and lack scientific rigor. This is in part because
many of the training programs—especially some Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD)
programs and for-profit training centers—are not grounded in science.

Obesity In Mid-life Reduces The Chance Of Healthy Survival In Women
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090929194205.htm
A new
study by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital
(BWH) researchers has found that, among a large study population of women who
lived until at least age 70, being overweight in mid-life was associated with
having more health problems later in life, including multiple chronic diseases,
and impaired cognitive function, physical function and mental health. Women who
were lean at age 18 and maintained a healthy weight through mid-life had the
best odds of achieving optimal health later in life. It is the first study to
show the role adiposity may play in the overall health of women who survive to
older ages.

whereas those in the placebo group did not, according to the researchers based
at Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok, Thailand.

PSA and Testosterone Part Two by Jeffrey Dach MD
http://jeffreydach.com/2009/10/08/psa-and-testosterone-part-two-by-jeffrey-dach-md.aspx
A
common medical myth is that Testosterone is somehow causative of prostate
cancer. This has been found to be completely incorrect, as we will see below.
Rather than elevated Testosterone being associated with prostate cancer, it is
LOWER levels that are associated with aggressive prostate cancer with poor
outcome. Indeed, lower testosterone has been found to be associated with
increased all cause mortality in males in the EPIC study.

the novel H1N1 virus run high.
Soda tax: A lot of froth over freedom
http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/view/print/263758
Is
taxing soda really an evil plan to curb your individual freedom? Conspiracy
theories aside, perhaps it’s simply a sensible scheme to tackle obesity when
personal choice has failed. Government leaders in the United States are yet
again considering imposing a tax on sugary drinks. But whenever the idea is
raised, advocates face loud opposition from those who want the freedom to have
unlimited cheap supplies of Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/view/print/263946
Harvard Medical School has recommended 11 foods including nuts and fatty fish
that make easy work of lowering cholesterol. The newly published list contains
quite different foods that are all capable of lowering cholesterol but do so in
different ways. Some deliver soluble fiber, which binds cholesterol and its
precursors in the digestive system and drags them out of the body before they
get into circulation. Others give you polyunsaturated fats, which directly lower
LDL, and some contain plant sterols and stenols that block cholesterol
absorption.

beneficially alters the structure of highly toxic proteins known as ADDLs.

Barry
Brown started the After 6 Social Club in Delray Villas because there weren't
many activities planned for nights or weekends, and he was still working. Four
years later, the club of mostly Baby Boomers has 160 members, meets at least
monthly and runs a signature fundraiser for Toys for Tots every November. But
Brown, who describes himself as not 62 yet, says he's still trying to overcome
the generation gap the group seems to engender.
"We got a bad rap at the beginning. It's very hard for the older generation to
accept the younger generation. We make changes much quicker," he said.

circuitry associated with cocaine addiction. The reversal appears to lessen the
cravings associated with cocaine, thus providing protection against relapse.
