AWARENESS: a Simple Strategy for Enriching Life and Work
By Leslie Charles, CSP
Here in Michigan the light is returning. As January winds down, first light comes earlier and darkness comes later. The woodpeckers are beginning to drum, and the squirrels in our yard are getting feisty. Things are changing; have you noticed? In nature, as in our lives, change is slow and subtle, yet ever present. The light changes a few seconds a day, soon adding up to minutes, and by summer the difference is vast, measured not in moments, but hours. It's a slow progression, indistinct at first, but one day we look around and truly grasp that things are different.
You too are changing, with the days, the seasons, and the years. So are the people you love, care about, work with. Have you recently noticed any changes within yourself, within others? Do you take long, studied looks at your family members and those you work with or serve-to consciously register their subtle transformations? And are you equally self-aware?
Sometimes we forget or neglect to note (or resist recognizing) the shifts in our relationships. Personally and professionally, it pays to pay attention. It's easy to miss cues and clues when we're preoccupied with life, work, and "matters of consequence." We blow off a pointed comment or sideways look because we're too busy to deal with it or don't want to bother. In truth, however, the wise part of us knows, senses, feels when something is off. We need to pay more attention to our inner voices.
The moment we give close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, magnificent world in itself. -Henry Miller
Throughout your day, take "awareness" breaks. Stop. Look around. Drink in your surroundings. When communicating with someone you know, love, or need to listen to, give your full attention. Now and then, absorb what's happening out there in the natural world and more often, note what's happening within your own.
