Perspective: an Enriching Practice
by Leslie Charles, CSP
Life isn't perfect. We learn this lesson early in life but too often our leaky brains lose the tutorial before we can truly internalize it. Perhaps you've fallen into the minefield of perfectionism, or at least stepped in it once or twice. I know a man who is exceptionally good looking but he confesses that when he looks in the mirror what he sees is his receding hair, not his symmetrical features. Don't even ask a woman what she sees!
Our relationships aren't perfect, our bodies aren't perfect, nor are the people we work or live with. Some of us daydream about what life would be like if only we could rearrange circumstances for even a few minutes. We seem to think that if only we could have, achieve or acquire (fill in the noun) that life would be "perfect." Maybe so, probably not (sorry!).
"I may not be perfect, but parts of me are excellent." -Virginia Satir
So we can't have perfection but we can have pretty good, really good, or even excellent more often than we think. Whether it's a body part, a relationship, a goal we're working toward, or a state of mind, we can choose to feel good about what we have, not "because of" but "in spite of."
Even in hard times we can concentrate on the parts of our lives that we feel good about or grateful for. We can reach into our grab box of gratitude, dredge up our sense of humor (or irony for the skeptics) and focus on what's right in our lives so we don't get swept away with what's wrong. It's called perspective.
Maybe you'll take a moment to home in on one or more of those little essentials today so you can accrue more enjoyment from your imperfect life and laugh or smile in spite of it all.
